The Catalan Pyrenees have several natural parks and protected areas ideal for touring and discovering the different landscapes that the Pyrenees offer along the mountain range. The following are some of the most representative ones where Outdoor Adventour offers activities:
Alt Pirineu Natural Park is the most extensive protected area in all Catalonia. It is located in the counties of Alt Urgell and Pallars Sobirà, and stands out for its extensive trail network that allow to discover the most remote valleys by following old cattle tracks.
The park has a great diversity of protected species of fauna and flora, some of them endemic, as well as a variety of landscapes from alpine areas to Mediterranean forests. In addition, it has some of the largest elements in the territory, such as the glacial lake of Certascan, which is the largest in the Pyrenees; as well as the Cigalera de l'Obaga de Baleran, one of the deepest cavities in Catalonia; or Pica d'Estats, the highest summit in the Catalan territory.
Apart from its natural elements, the park stands out for the humanized mountains and the populated areas located in its valleys, which allow us to enjoy an interesting cultural and artistic heritage that still preserves ancestral traditions.
Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park rises like a barrier of cliffs between the Pyrenees and the Lower Pyrenees. Its north face is particularly striking, with steep rock walls. Within the natural park we can find Pedraforca peak, a mountain with a unique shape located in the southern area, which is one of the symbols of hiking in Catalonia.
The Capçaleres del Ter & Freser Natural Park is located at the high valleys of the Ripollés county, around the enclaves of Núria and Ulldeter, at by the French border. Its highlights include alpine and subalpine forests, the two rivers Ter and Freser and their torrents, which have carved out the valleys creating deep ravines such as the impressive Roques Tot-lo-Món. In addition, the park is distributed among 7 different villages where Romanesque buildings and architectural treasures are located.
The Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park is located in the Pyrenees of Girona. The volcanic episodes began about 350,000 years ago and ended about 8,300 years ago. Almost 40 volcanic cones have been recorded in good condition, as well as more than 20 lava flows. In this area there has always been a large and constant human population, which does not correspond to the typical image of a natural park.
